This Maha Kumbh celebrated every 12 years, is one of the biggest pilgrimage in Hinduism when thousands of devotees come to the river for ritual bathe and get themselves enlightened to the divine. This is proof of a deep-rooted belief and cultural depth that India holds, as people from all walks leave their daily chores to witness this ancient tradition. The 2025 Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj, UP is going to be massive and richer in terms of culture than ever.
Sattriya: A Living Tradition
Sattriya culture is an intrinsic part of cultural and religious life in Assam introduced in 15th century by Mahapurusha Assam Saishcandra Sankardev Vaishnava saint and social reformer. It came as a community religious art to spread devotion of Lord Krishna through dance-drama and music. His work came up with an integrated art that included an ancient well developed philosophy intertwined with entertainment from the tomes which the saint drew.
Sattriya dance was declared by Indian government in the year 2000 as one of its classical art form. This style is now famous for its vibrant telling of stories, depth into the spiritual and theatrics coordinated choreography.
The dance form is a part of what traditionally dances in Satras (monasteries) and is well known for its tik-tik footwork, hand mudras (hand gestures) and full costumes. UNESCO has also recognized Sattriya as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity making it a language tag for how important and being nurtured this or that is.
Bridging East and West
This move to include Sattriya in the Maha Kumbh 2025 is highly important as a step towards the cultural amalgamation of NE culture with that of the whole country. Long before it finds place in the mainstream, Assam has been a reservoir of vibrant and aesthetic traditions that are so often underplayed on a bigger canvas. The coming of Sattriya at Kumbh will not only give a define glimpse to the souls of artistic heritage of the state but also provide the whole country in knowing and accepting that Assam too has contributed some best things for the Indian culture.
Assam will be brought to the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, where the congregation of tourists for the first time will also see Sattriya culture with drama, dance and music (played on Khol, bandari, flute, veena and dotara) with traditional Borgeet.
From the Aauniati Satra Vaishnabs of Majuli on a team of 40, the cultural treasure trove of Sattriya will be shown to the world in Ram Vijay Bhaona, Diha Nam and Apsara Dance together with Bhagawat through performances.
Both lyrical and lithe of spirit and conclusion, the Paurashik Bhangi, the male style; and Stri Bhangi- the female presentation style will be demonstrated in all its beauty.
Performing – Satradhikar of Aauniati Satra Pitambar Dev Goswami: “This is the first time that we have been requested to show Sattriya culture at a such big fest like Maha Kumbh Mela” . Also needs mentioning is that Satriya culture has its roots deep into the cultural-religious texture of Assam.
Cultural Exchange and Education
There at the Maha Kumbh will be Assamese artists and performers from artist camp with several Sattriya performances, workshops & talks. The events are planned to create a common ground for the participants to understand philosophy, history and skills of Sattriya. The performances will be executed in special pavilions constructed for the art and culture of Assam and offer an immersive experience to the audience.
The diversification of the Maha Kumbh through traditional Assamese arts and crafts, textile exhibitions, as well as flavours of a Minimal Cuisine (popular among pilgrims) focuses to add more hues in this colorful canvas. The cultural exchange is expected to bring our nations together, revive memories and bridge the distance between various regions within our periphery.
Preserving and Promoting Heritage
Sattriya being introduced for the first time in the big Kumbh at Maha kumbh is itself an important cross road to take care of this ancient art form. The Assam Government and its cultural organizations/institutions have been working very hard to save Sattriya and make it tenable for more people. This Maha Kumbh will hopefully result in more interest for Sattriya, both in India and in the international as well.
