Harmeet Singh Takes Charge as Director General of Police (DGP) of Assam

On Wednesday, Harmeet Singh took over as the Director General of Police (DGP) DGP Assam, replacing the outgoing Gyanendra Pratap (GP) Singh at a function at the Assam Police headquarters in Ulubari. This is a momentous transition for the Assam Police, under the able and visionary leadership of Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma.

About Harmeet Singh

Harmeet Singh is an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer from the 1992 batch. He will be continuing with another key responsibilities as well after taking over the charge as the new DGP of Assam including Director General, Civil Defence, Commandant General, Home Guards, Special DGP (Headquarters), Special DGP & Director, Fire and Emergency Services and Special DGP (Border). His senior leadership roles across law enforcement reflect the trust in his leadership and denoting extensive experience across all fronts of law enforcement and public safety.

Message by Harmeet Singh during the Ceremony

Harmeet Singh gave a clear and inspiring message to all assembled personnel during the handing-over of the ceremony. He underlined that the Assam Police has become a force to be reckoned with in the past two years as per the vision of Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma for a safe and secure Assam. “The Assam Police has changed markedly, moving to a citizen-centric system of delivery aimed at serving the people,” he said. The movement for change continues, and the statistics reflect the change. I was involved in the transformation, and we will take ahead the CM’s vision. To serve the people’s interest and to work for their benefit is our objective. We are completely approachable; we are human-friendly, and we’ll keep working the way we have worked.”

Some of Harmeet Singh’s objectives towards developing the Assam Police, demonstrates his dedication. By then, he wants to move the force into the ranks of the top five police organizations in the country and, ultimately, as No. 1. “We will keep working towards that until we get there, and our immediate focus will always be the welfare of the people,” he said.

About the farewell of DGP GP Singh in the Ceremony

The 4th APBn headquarters in Kahilipara, on Wednesday morning, accorded DGP GP Singh as a grand farewell as he has served as DGP of the 14th State since February 1, 2023. He has been appointed as the Director General (DG) of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) for a new term of service.

GP Singh expressed heartfelt gratitude to all police officials in his good bye message, who supported him during his tenure. He also credited Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma for his tireless work in empowering the Assam Police and expressed hope that fortunes would only shine upon the force. “But I will keep associating with Assam Police and the people of Assam,” he added. “People of Assam can consider me, remember me as an adopted son of Assam.”

During this meeting, GP Singh highlighted that important personal values and health aspect, advised officers to be a good human being, take care of themselves and uphold their service with dignity. He paid tribute to martyrs of the Assam Police at the Swahid Bedi and extended his heartfelt gratitude to his colleagues for their commitment and sincerity.

Taking over the reins, Harmeet Singh thanked GP Singh for his leadership and acknowledged the progress the Assam Police had accomplished under him. “The guidance will always be an asset as we strive to further strengthen the force”, the new DGP said.
