India and Nepal Sign MoU for Enhanced Scientific Collaboration

India and Nepal have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to advance their scientific cooperation. The agreement, signed between the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), India, and the Nepal Academy of Science and Technology (NAST), aims to foster joint research, innovation, and knowledge exchange in areas such as biological sciences, water technologies, alternative energy, and material sciences. Formalized on February 18, 2025, this MoU is expected to open new avenues for scientific collaboration and strengthen the long-standing partnership between the two nations.

Celebrating 22 Years of NCST: Empowering Scheduled Tribes

The National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST) celebrated its 22nd Foundation Day on February 20, 2025, in New Delhi. Union Minister for Tribal Affairs, Jual Oram, commended the Commission for its proactive initiatives and crucial role in implementing the Forest Rights Act. The event highlighted key government programs like Eklavya Model Residential Schools and various scholarships. NCST Chairperson Antar Singh Arya discussed the Commission’s efforts in safeguarding tribal rights and promoting development. The celebration included sessions on tribal progress, skill enhancement, and entrepreneurship.

Increase in Guillain-Barré Syndrome Cases in Andhra Pradesh

Andhra Pradesh is experiencing a rise in Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) cases, prompting government intervention. The Chief Minister has initiated an investigation into the outbreak, following similar reports from Maharashtra earlier this year. GBS is a rare autoimmune disorder that affects the peripheral nervous system, causing muscle weakness and paralysis. While GBS is non-communicable, early diagnosis and appropriate medical care are crucial. The Health Minister has assured the public of the availability of necessary medical resources to manage and treat the condition effectively.

India and US Strengthen Military Partnership with Javelin Missile Agreement

India and the United States have fortified their military alliance with a new agreement on the Javelin Anti-Tank Guided Missile. Following a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Donald Trump, the nations announced plans for procurement and co-production of the advanced missile. Developed by Raytheon and Lockheed Martin, the Javelin missile features fire-and-forget capability, enhancing India’s defense capabilities. This collaboration signifies a deepening military partnership, emphasizing technology transfer and boosting indigenous defense production.

India Introduces ₹1,000 Crore Credit Guarantee Scheme for e-NWRs

The Government of India has launched a ₹1,000 crore Credit Guarantee Scheme for electronic-Negotiable Warehouse Receipts (e-NWRs) to enhance credit access for farmers. This initiative, part of the Digital India Mission, aims to reduce distress sales by enabling farmers to pledge their stored goods in accredited warehouses and secure loans. The scheme is designed to support small and marginal farmers, women, and disadvantaged groups, improving post-harvest financing and providing greater agricultural support.

Centre Releases XV Finance Commission Grants for Rural Local Bodies

The Union Government has disbursed the Fifteenth Finance Commission (XV FC) grants for the fiscal year 2024-25, benefiting rural local bodies in Bihar, Haryana, and Sikkim. Bihar received ₹821.80 crore as the second installment of untied grants, along with the withheld portion of the first installment. Haryana’s rural local bodies were allocated ₹202.46 crore, while Sikkim received ₹6.26 crore. These funds are earmarked for developmental activities, including sanitation, drinking water supply, and other essential services, aiming to enhance the quality of life in rural areas.
