Biodiversity Loss Driven by Global Consumption Patterns
Recent research by Princeton University, published in February 2025, shows that high-income nations’ consumption patterns are a major driver of global biodiversity loss. Developed countries are responsible for 13.3% of global species range decline due to their demand for agricultural and forestry products. This consumption-driven deforestation has severe consequences for biodiversity, especially in tropical regions. The findings highlight the urgent need for sustainable consumption practices and international cooperation to mitigate biodiversity loss.
