Tamil Nadu Sparks Debate with Tamil Script for Rupee Symbol

The Tamil Nadu government has introduced the Tamil letter “ரூ” to represent the rupee in its 2025-26 budget logo, replacing the national ₹ symbol. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin emphasized this move as a step to celebrate Tamil identity and cultural pride. The letter “ரூ” corresponds to “Rubaai,” meaning rupee in Tamil. While supporters see this as a tribute to Tamil heritage, critics argue it diminishes the unified identity symbolized by the ₹ design, originally created by a Tamilian. This decision has reignited discussions on balancing regional representation and national coherence in India’s diverse cultural landscape.

India’s Retail Inflation Eases to 3.61% in February 2025

India’s retail inflation fell to 3.61% in February 2025, marking a seven-month low and staying comfortably within the Reserve Bank of India’s 4% target. This decline is largely due to a significant drop in food inflation, which decreased to 3.75% from January’s 5.97%. Key contributors include reduced prices for vegetables, pulses, dairy, eggs, and meat. Rural inflation declined to 3.79%, while urban inflation stood at 3.32%. The easing inflation offers relief to households by lowering costs and could encourage the Reserve Bank of India to explore further monetary policy measures to support economic growth and stability.
