Clean Ganga Mission Introduces Dolphin Ambulance Initiative

The National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) is advancing its conservation efforts with a special focus on the Ganga Dolphin, an endangered species. In its latest initiative, NMCG has launched a Dolphin Ambulance, a specially designed vehicle to aid in the rescue and care of dolphins in distress. This project, named “Advancing Rescue System for the Protection of Stranded Ganges River Dolphins,” is allocated a budget of Rs 1 crore. The initiative aims to raise awareness about the importance of dolphin conservation and provide training to local communities for effective dolphin management.

Nepal Initiates Historic Electricity Export to Bangladesh

Nepal has recently begun exporting electricity to Bangladesh through India’s electricity grid, marking a historic milestone in regional energy cooperation. The ceremony, held on November 15, 2024, was attended by key officials from Nepal, Bangladesh, and India. The power flow, which is expected to enhance sub-regional connectivity, involves the export of 40 MW of electricity from Nepal to Bangladesh. This initiative is part of a trilateral agreement signed by Nepal, India, and Bangladesh, aiming to support Bangladesh’s energy needs and promote sustainable energy trade in the region.

New Freshwater Fish Genus Koima Discovered in Western Ghats

Recent research has unveiled the genus Koima, a new group of freshwater fish endemic to the Western Ghats. This discovery underscores the region’s rich biodiversity and highlights the need for further taxonomic studies. The research, conducted by a team from the Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies and Shiv Nadar Institution of Eminence, was published in the journal Zootaxa. The genus Koima includes two species previously misclassified under the genus Nemacheilus. The discovery emphasizes the importance of comprehensive taxonomic revisions to better understand and conserve the region’s aquatic life.

Tata Power Inaugurates 126 MW Omkareshwar Floating Solar Project

Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL) has recently inaugurated the Omkareshwar Floating Solar Project in Madhya Pradesh. This major floating solar installation boasts a capacity of 126 megawatts (MW) and is strategically situated between the Indirasagar and Omkareshwar hydroelectric reservoirs. The project comprises 213,460 bifacial glass-to-glass modules and is expected to generate 204,580 megawatt-hours (MWh) of energy annually. It will also offset approximately 173,893 tonnes of CO₂ emissions each year and conserve an estimated 32.5 million cubic meters of water annually by reducing evaporation from the reservoirs.

Inaugural Bodoland Mahotsav Celebrates Bodo Culture in New Delhi

The inaugural Bodoland Mahotsav is set to take place in New Delhi, celebrating the rich language, literature, and culture of the Bodo community. The Prime Minister’s Office has highlighted the event’s significance in promoting peace and unity among the Bodo people. The two-day festival, themed “Peace and Harmony for a Prosperous Bharat,” will feature traditional Bodo dance performances, literary discussions, and cultural showcases. Over 5,000 attendees, including participants from across India and neighboring countries like Nepal and Bhutan, are expected to join the celebrations.

Operation Dronagiri: Showcasing Geospatial Tech for Better Living

Professor Abhay Karandikar, Secretary of the Department of Science and Technology, introduced Operation Dronagiri, a pilot project under the National Geospatial Policy 2022. The initiative aims to demonstrate the potential of geospatial technologies in enhancing the quality of life for citizens and streamlining business operations. The first phase will be implemented in Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Assam, Andhra Pradesh, and Maharashtra, showcasing applications in agriculture, livelihoods, logistics, and transport. The project includes the Integrated Geospatial Data Sharing Interface (GDI), which will facilitate seamless data sharing and analysis for urban planning, environmental monitoring, and disaster management.

The World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims (WDR) is observed annually on the third Sunday of November, this year falling on November 17, 2024. This global event honors the millions of people who have lost their lives or been severely injured in road traffic accidents. The theme for 2024 is “Remember. Support. Act. It aims to remember the victims, recognize the efforts of emergency services, advocate for better support for victims and their families, and promote actions to prevent further road traffic deaths and injuries.
