Decoding Operation Tamarisk: Unconventional Espionage Tactics of the Cold War

During the Cold War, the stakes in intelligence gathering were immensely high as the U.S., U.K., and France sought an upper hand over the Soviet Union. One of the most unconventional methods deployed was Operation Tamarisk, where agents sifted through discarded materials left behind by Soviet troops. This clandestine operation took place in East Germany, with agents meticulously combing through garbage, including food scraps, personal letters, military documents, and even used toilet paper. Remarkably, Soviet troops often used official documents as toilet paper, which meant valuable intelligence was frequently found among the trash. The information gathered provided critical insights into Soviet military strategies, troop morale, and even specific details about injuries among soldiers. Despite the unsanitary and hazardous nature of the work, the intelligence collected through Operation Tamarisk proved invaluable in understanding the Soviet Union’s operations.
