Switzerland announced the removal of the most-favored-nation (MFN) clause from its tax agreement with India. This change follows a 2023 Supreme Court ruling involving Nestle, which clarified the applicability of the MFN clause. Effective from January 1, 2025, this decision will impact Indian companies operating in Switzerland, particularly in sectors such as financial services, pharmaceuticals, and IT.
The MFN status, a cornerstone of global trade under World Trade Organization (WTO) rules, ensures that countries provide equal trade advantages to all partners. With the suspension, Indian goods and services may face higher tariffs, additional trade barriers, and reduced access to the Swiss market.
