Biochar in Steel Production:
The Indian government has established a 14th task force to explore the use of biochar in steel production. Biochar is black carbon produced from biomass sources like agricultural waste products. The domestic steel sector in India contributes 12% of the country’s greenhouse gas emissions, with an emission intensity of 2.55 tonnes CO2 per tonne of crude steel (compared to the global average of 1.9 tonnes CO2). The task force aims to reduce carbon emissions by integrating biochar into steel manufacturing processes. Biochar can be used as a sustainable alternative to traditional raw materials like coke and coal. Former steel secretary Aruna Sharma highlighted that biochar manufacturing using stainless steel chambers offers a non-corrosive and non-toxic material that can also be used in electric arc furnaces.

MGNREGS Wage Rates Revised:
The Union rural development ministry has revised wages under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS).
The new wage rates vary between four and ten percent for different states.
Haryana has the highest unskilled worker wage rate at ₹374 per day, while Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland have the lowest wage rates at ₹234 per day.
State-specific changes include Goa witnessing the highest increase (₹34 per day) and Andhra Pradesh seeing an increase of ₹28 per day.
Overall, the hikes range from four to ten percent across states.
