The top three countries in the index are Norway, Denmark, and Sweden. These rankings reflect the state of press freedom globally, emphasizing the need for a free and transparent media environment.

India’s e-commerce industry is poised for remarkable growth, with projections indicating that it will surge to $325 billion by 2030. This expansion is driven by several factors, including increased internet penetration, affordable internet services, and a growing number of smartphone users. Notably, rural India is playing a significant role in driving this upward trend. The future of e-commerce in India looks promising, with annual growth rates projected at 18% through 2025. By 2030, India is expected to emerge as the third-largest consumer market globally, underscoring the immense opportunities and potential within the e-commerce sector in the country.

  • India’s reliance on Chinese imports has indeed become a significant concern, as highlighted by the Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) report. The surge in the import bill from $70 billion in 2018-19 to over $101 billion in 2023-24 is indicative of this growing dependence. Over the past fifteen years, China’s share of India’s industrial goods imports has notably increased, reaching 30%. This trend is concerning, especially considering that imports from China have been outpacing India’s total imports by 2.3 times.   • The Nilgiri Tahr, an endangered mountain ungulate endemic to the Western Ghats of India, is the focus of a three-day survey conducted by the Tamil Nadu government.The survey aims to estimate the population of Nilgiri Tahrs and better understand their habitat and conservation needs.Collaborating with organizations like the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and the Wildlife Institute of India (WII), the survey employs methods such as bounded-count and double observer techniques. Project Nilgiri Tahr includes efforts to stabilize the population, reintroduce them in historic habitats, and address threats like habitat loss and poaching.
  • Maharashtra Day, also known as Maharashtra Divas, holds significant historical and cultural importance in India. It commemorates the formation of the state of Maharashtra on May 1st, 1960. Maharashtra was created by carving out the Marathi-speaking regions of the former Bombay Presidency. Present-day Gujarat constitutes the other part of the former Bombay state.

The Uttarakhand government has taken significant action by suspending the manufacturing licenses of nearly 15 products manufactured by Baba Ramdev’s Patanjali Ayurved. This decision was made in response to repeated instances of misleading advertising. Ramdev now faces scrutiny for non-compliance with directives to cease such practices. The top court had directed Patanjali to stop advertisements of its products that it claimed to treat ailments and disorders specified in the Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act, 1954, in November 2023, during the hearing of a plea filed by the Indian Medical Association (IMA) seeking action against Ramdev for criticizing modern medicine.

  • The Union Ministry of Home Affairs has approved the Uttar Pradesh Government’s proposal to rename eight railway stations in Amethi district. This initiative, led by BJP Amethi MP Smriti Irani, seeks to preserve the cultural heritage of the region by honoring local icons. The new station names reflect the area’s historical and religious significance. Here are the details of the renamed stations:

Jais will be renamed Guru Gorakhnath Dham.

Bani will become Swami Paramhans.

Misrauli will be known as Maa Kalika Dham.

Nihalgarh will take the name Maharaja Bijli Pasi.

Akbarganj will be renamed Maa Ahorwa Bhawani Dham.

 Iran has recently unveiled a new attack drone that bears a striking resemblance to Russia’s Lancet drone. Developed by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), this unnamed drone is designed for targeted attacks. It shares similarities with the Russian Zala Lancet drone, which has been effectively used in combat situations in Syria and Ukraine. The Iranian drone has a flight duration of 30 to 60 minutes, can carry payloads weighing 3 to 6 kg, and cover distances of up to 40 kilometers. Equipped with electro-optical equipment and a built-in warhead, it is ideal for countering ambushes.

  • Iraq’s parliament recently passed a sweeping anti-LGBT+ law that criminalizes same-sex relationships and could result in up to 15 years in prison for those convicted. The legislation, known as the Law on Combating Prostitution and Homosexuality, also imposes prison sentences of between one and three years for transgender individuals. This recent legislation represents a concerning trend of increased scrutiny and persecution of LGBT individuals in Iraq .

Humza Yousaf, Scotland’s first Muslim First Minister and leader of the Scottish National Party (SNP), has formally resigned from his position. His decision follows the collapse of the SNP’s coalition with the Scottish Greens, which triggered opposition no-confidence motions. Yousaf’s leadership came to an end after he scrapped the power-sharing Bute House Agreement with the Scottish Greens, leaving the SNP with a minority in parliament. Facing motions of no confidence, he confirmed his resignation last Monday.   •  Al Maktoum International Airport, also known as Dubai World Central, is an international airport located in Jebel Ali, 37 kilometers (23 miles) southwest of Dubai, United Arab Emirates. It opened on 27 June 2010 and is the main part of Dubai South, a planned residential, commercial, and logistics complex. When fully completed (now expected by 2030), the airport will cover an area of 14,000 hectares (35,000 acres) and will feature five parallel runways and 400 aircraft gates. Its projected annual capacity is between 160 million and 260 million passengers. The airport’s focus has been on freight activity, with only a handful of airlines operating passenger services from there as of 2021. Excitingly, Al Maktoum International Airport will employ never-before-seen aviation technologies, further enhancing Dubai’s commitment to innovation and global connectivity.

China has successfully launched its historic Chang’e-6 mission, which aims to collect rocks from the far side of the Moon. The 53-day odyssey, carried out by a 7.2-meter-tall, 8-tonne spacecraft aboard a Long March 5 rocket, will be the country’s most complex and challenging Moon mission. Scientists hope to examine the first rocks from the Moon’s far side by late June. The lunar far side, distinct from its near side, remained quieter under a thick and heavily cratered crust. Chang’e-6 will investigate the topography, composition, and subsurface structure of the South Pole–Aitken basin, the largest and oldest impact basin on the lunar surface. After landing, the spacecraft will drop a lander to drill and scoop up two kilograms of soil and rocks, providing crucial clues about the Moon’s early history and the solar system.

Additionally, they can allocate up to 30% of their net worth annually, provided it remains under ₹1,000 crore.   • Deloitte India now predicts a robust GDP growth of 7.6% to 7.8% for FY24, up from the previous estimate of 6.9% to 7.2%. This revision is due to stronger-than-expected growth and revised GDP data.Deloitte expects GDP to expand by approximately 6.6% in FY25, driven by factors like consumption expenditure and exports rebound.
  • As of May 1, 2024, India has reduced its windfall tax on petroleum crude to ₹8,400 per metric ton from the previous rate of ₹9,600 per ton. This adjustment follows a recent increase from ₹6,800 to ₹9,600 per ton on April 16. The tax is levied in the form of special additional excise duty (SAED) on domestically produced crude oil. It’s interesting to note that India first imposed windfall profit taxes on July 1, 2022, joining other nations that tax supernormal profits of energy companies. The tax rates are reviewed every fortnight based on average oil prices in the previous two weeks.
  •  In April 2024, India achieved a remarkable milestone in its Goods and Services Tax (GST) revenue collection, reaching a record high of ₹2.10 lakh crore. This represents a substantial 12.4% year-on-year growth. The surge was driven by a strong increase in domestic transactions (up 13.4%) and imports (up 8.3%). After accounting for refunds, the net GST revenue for April 2024 stood at ₹1.92 lakh crore, reflecting an impressive 15.5% growth compared to the same period last year.

In April 2024, India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) transactions experienced a slight dip. The volume of transactions decreased by 1% month-on-month, totaling 13.30 billion transactions, compared to the previous month’s figure of 13.44 billion transactions. Similarly, the total transaction value for April stood at ₹19.64 lakh crore, down marginally from ₹19.78 lakh crore in March. However, it’s important to note that year-on-year growth remains strong, with a 50% increase in volume and a 40% increase in value compared to the same period last year. The dip in April can be attributed to the typically higher transaction volumes in March.

  • The Government of India has recently renewed its Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of Bangladesh. This agreement aims to train 1500 Bangladeshi officers from 2025 to 2030. The training programs will be conducted by India’s National Centre for Good Governance (NCGG), focusing on mid-career capacity-building initiatives in field administration for Bangladesh Civil Servants.
