PM Modi Honored with Barbados’ Order of Freedom

Prime Minister Narendra Modi received the ‘Honorary Order of Freedom of Barbados’ for his leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic. The award, presented by Minister of State for External Affairs and Textiles Pabitra Margherita at a ceremony in Bridgetown, Barbados, recognizes Modi’s efforts and contributions. Modi expressed gratitude to the Government and people of Barbados, dedicating the honor to the 1.4 billion Indians and celebrating the close ties between India and Barbados.

Mark Carney Becomes Canada’s Liberal Party Leader and Prime Minister

Mark Carney, former central banker, has been appointed as the new leader of Canada’s Liberal Party and the country’s next Prime Minister. Carney won the Liberal Party leadership race with nearly 86% of the votes, succeeding Justin Trudeau, who resigned in January. His appointment comes amid a trade war with the United States under President Donald Trump. Carney has pledged to uphold retaliatory tariffs on American imports and focus on strengthening Canada’s economy.

Justice Joymalya Bagchi Elevated to Supreme Court

The Indian government has appointed Justice Joymalya Bagchi of the Calcutta High Court to the Supreme Court. The recommendation for his elevation was made by the Supreme Court Collegium on March 6, 2025. Justice Bagchi, who began his judicial career in June 2011, has served in the Calcutta and Andhra Pradesh High Courts. He is anticipated to become the Chief Justice of India in May 2031, following the retirement of Justice K V Viswanathan, and will serve until October 2031.
