Discovering Nipponopterus: Japan’s Ancient Flying Reptile

Pterosaurs were fascinating flying reptiles that soared the skies from 210 to 65 million years ago, long before birds and bats emerged. Recent discoveries in Japan have led to the identification of a new species called Nipponopterus mifunensis, a member of the Azhdarchidae family known for some of the largest pterosaurs. This remarkable species lived around 90 million years ago during the Late Cretaceous period. The fossil, discovered in the Mifune Group in Kumamoto Prefecture on Kyushu Island, was found in a sandstone layer between two volcanic rock layers. This find significantly enriches our understanding of pterosaur diversity and evolution.
